Oktoberfest isn’t just another festival. It’s a tradition, a celebration, and a cultural phenomenon that brings millions of people together across the globe. First held in Munich over 200 years ago, it’s now celebrated in dozens of locations worldwide. And since the Czechs are a beer nation, there’s no reason why we shouldn’t enjoy this global event, too. In the Czech Republic, beer is more than a drink — it’s part of our culture, community, and traditions.
And yes — in 2025, we’ll once again host our very own Oktoberfest Prague 2025 in Riegrovy Sady. But how much do you actually know about Oktoberfest?
So, What Exactly Is Oktoberfest?
Oktoberfest is the largest beer festival in the world. Every year, it attracts over 6 million visitors to Munich, where people come for the beer, Bavarian cuisine, live music, and an atmosphere that connects cultures across continents.
You might wonder: “Why celebrate a German festival in Prague?” Our answer: “Why not?” Czechs are proud to be a beer nation. We brew some of the world’s best beers and hold the title for highest beer consumption per capita. And just like we enjoy Italian pizza, American hot dogs, or Asian noodles, we’re more than happy to embrace a Bavarian vibe too.
Curious how a royal wedding turned into a global tradition? Let’s dive in.
The History of Oktoberfest: How It All Began
The first Oktoberfest was held in 1810 to celebrate the royal wedding of Crown Prince Ludwig and Princess Therese of Bavaria. The festivities included horse races, music, dancing, and — of course — beer. The event was such a success that Munich decided to repeat it the following year, and just like that, a tradition was born.
Today, more than 200 years later, Oktoberfest has become the world’s biggest beer festival. Officially, it begins in late September and ends on the first Sunday in October — lasting 16 to 18 days, depending on the year.
Fun fact: Oktoberfest used to be held entirely in October, but chilly Bavarian weather pushed the start into September for warmer, sunnier days — yet the name stuck.
That’s why Oktoberfest Prague 2025 kicks off on September 12th, bringing you the best late-summer vibes. Get ready for 10 days of echt gold fun.

Oktoberfest by the Numbers
Time for some impressive stats straight from Munich. These numbers don’t lie — this is what we call a das Massaker:
- Over 7.3 million liters of beer are poured each year.
- More than 120,000 pretzels and 500,000 roasted chickens are devoured.
- Visitors enjoy over 400 hours of live music across dozens of stages.
- More than 12,000 staff keep the event running smoothly.
- There are now 80+ official Oktoberfests held worldwide.
So, hand on your stein: how many beers could you handle?
Where in the World Is Oktoberfest Celebrated?
Gone are the days when Oktoberfest belonged only to Munich. Today, it’s celebrated around the globe — and often on a massive scale:
- Cincinnati, USA — the largest Oktoberfest outside Europe, attracting over 500,000 visitors.
- Blumenau, Brazil — a tropical blend of Bavarian tradition and Brazilian flair.
- Kitchener, Canada — over 50 years of nonstop celebrations.
- Tokyo, Japan — rooftop beer tents in the heart of the city’s skyscrapers.
- Melbourne, Australia — Oktoberfest under the sun, Aussie style.
- Barcelona, Spain — tapas + beer = the perfect match.
- Prague, Czech Republic — and yes, we’re thrilled to host our very own Oktoberfest Prague 2025 in Riegrovy Sady!
We’re not trying to compete with Munich — we’re creating something uniquely ours, with a proper Czech twist.
